Vehicular traffic came to a halt on the Imphal-Silchar road on the National Highway 37, connecting Manipur with Assam, on the first day of the 32-hour bandh at Jiribam in Manipur today.
The supporters blocked the highway at Jiribam bridge making vehicles impossible to move on the stretch, police said.
No shops and business establishments were opened at Jiribam Bazaar. All educational institutions remained closed, they said.
The bandh was called by the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) to press their demand for a full-fledged Jiribam district.
