The Coimbatore District Basketball Association will revive the five-decade old Nachimuthu Gounder Cup, which was not held for the last five to six years, a senior Association functionary today said.
Nachimuthu Gounder is the father of late industrialist Pollachi N Mahalingam, who founded the association 54 years ago, and went on to become the president of Tamil Nadu Basket Ball Association and was instrumental in hosting senior national basketball championship in 1966 in Coimbatore, G Selvaraj, newly elected president of CDBA, told reporters here.
The association has also plans to revive the A and B division league matches, which have not been conducted for some years now, he said.
Stating that the newly elected team would strive to give importance in promoting the game in rural pockets such as Pollachi, Annur and Thondamuthur, Selvaraj said it has plans to enhance its financial position by seeking support of corporate companies, industrialists and sports enthusiasts.
In the elections for various posts today, C Anand, C N Ashok, T Palanisamy and A Rajesekar were elected vice presidents, R Syril Irudayaraj secretary and N Krishnan and S Suresh as joint secretaries, Selvaraj said.
