The 50-year-old Luhrmann has already have worked with DiCaprio twice before and he now wants him in his next project as well.
"To me, Gatsby is the American Hamlet. What else could we possibly do as a follow-up ?" said Luhrmann
Luhrmann said he needs to persuade DiCaprio to take on another Shakespeare work to complete their bookish trifecta, said Hollywood Reporter.
"It's just a dream at this point," he added.
"The Great Gatsby" is slated for a release in the US on May 10 and in UK on May 16.
