The actor took the stage at the Park Lane Hilton Hotel to celebrate one of the people behind the popular detective series, calling her "a brilliant woman".
Vertue, who was also a producer of hit comedies "Up Pompeii", "Steptoe and Son", and "Men Behaving Badly", was handed a lifetime achievement prize at the gala, reported Contactmusic.
"We have known each other a long time and not only have I had the pleasure of working with her, but I'm very lucky to know her and call such a brilliant woman my friend," Cumberbatch said as he presented her with the accolade.
