The West Bengal unit of the CPI(M) today discussed the merits of uniting the Left, democratic and secular forces during its closed-door state committee meeting, a senior leader of the party said here today.
The development comes weeks after the central committee of the party voted out a proposal of alliance with the Congress.
A large section of CPI(M) leaders, during the two-day meet here, said the "Left Front and Congress" alliance in the 2016 assembly polls failed to capture power but restored confidence among the masses and cadres that the "TMC government can be defeated", he said.
The state unit of the party has placed a draft resolution at the committee meeting, detailing its proposals. It will be taken up for discussion in the upcoming state conference of the party in March, the leader said.
According to sources in the CPI(M), the draft resolution has also stressed on "bringing down the age group of leadership and roping in more young and active faces in the party".
"Since we lost power in 2011, our party on various occasions has raised concerns over the leadership of old and inactive members. So we have proposed a relaxation in the age bar" another senior CPI(M) state committee member said on the condition of anonymity.
