The West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department on Friday entered into a partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) for a programme that will enable energy-efficient water supply across the state.

EESL, a JV of CPSUs, will be implementing the Municipal Energy Efficiency Programme (MEEP) in West Bengal, which was inaugurated by minister Firhad Hakim on Friday.

A total of 39 urban local bodies (ULBs) have joined the programme, and 1,060 water pumps are being replaced with energy-efficient variants, officials said.

The MEEP will translate into energy savings of 33.22 million units annually, resulting in monetary savings of Rs 153.65 crore during the project period of seven years, they said.

"Energy efficiency in municipal water supply systems will play a huge role in our water conservation efforts and this programme is a step in the right direction," Hakim, also the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, said.
