Three other towns in the state registered temperature of above 40 degrees Celsius, weatherman said.
The industrial town of Angul recorded 40.1 degrees Celsius, Bolangir 40 degrees Celsius and Titlagarh 40.5 degrees Celsius.
In Bhubaneswar the high temperature coupled with humidity level of 88 per cent hit life. Today was the second day when the mercury level was above 41 degrees Celsius, the met office said.
The city had yesterday experienced temperature at 41.7 degrees C, about four dgrees more than what it was on Saturday.
The sharp rise in the mercury is mostly due to change in the wind pattern. The wind flow, which was blowing from the north-west or west direction yesterday, has changed to south-west direction today, Sarat Sahu, the director of the Meteorological centre here said.
The situation could continue till March 26 and March 27, he said adding a possible trough line till Jharkhand could cause rainfall after March 27.
A release from the IMD said temperature hovered around 37 degree to 39 degrees Celsius in Balasore, 39.7 degrees Celsius at Chandbali, 39 degree in Cuttack, 37.6 degrees Celsius in Baripada, 39.5 in Jharsuguda, 36.7 degrees Celsius in Keonjhar, 39.2 degree at Sambalpur, 39 degrees Celsius at Sundergarh.
