An official BJP candidate from Srivardhan assembly segment of Raigad district was allegedly cheated to the tune of Rs 1 lakh by a cheat, merely three days before the recent assembly polls, the police officially announced here today.
An official release issued here today by the Thane police commissionerate said that the victim Krishna Kobnak residing at Vivekananda Nagar in the city, had contested elections from the 193 Srivardhan constrituency on a BJP ticket as its official candidate.
It was on October 12, 2014, while he was busy in poll related work in the constituency when he received a call from a caller who claimed to be calling from BJP headquarters in Delhi and said that Kobnak would get Rs 50 lakh as election funds.
The caller asked Kobnak to deposit an amount of Rs 1 lakh in an ICICI Bank account operated by 'Alex Garments' at New Delhi, which he did promptly.
According to Kobnak's complaint lodged at the Vartak Nagar police station on Tuesday, he had received the call from cellular phone number 07042944891, after which he immediately deposited the money as directed by the caller.
The Vartak Nagar police has registered an offence under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and a probe is on, the police said.
