The Police had to use water cannon and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the protesters opposing construction of the market shed at Thangal Bazar, the main marketing centre of Imphal, controlled by women and popularly known as Women Market.
Two major market sheds, Lakshmi Market and New Market, were badly damaged in the January 4 earthquake.
Following the arrest of Joykisan Singh, large number of protesters took to the streets in the Thangmeiband, Nagamapal and Thangal Bazar areas of Imphal West district defying the prohibitory orders.
