BJP MLAs protest after speaker rejects demand for debate on illegal immigrants in Delhi

The opposition BJP Legislators today staged a sit-in inside Delhi Assembly premises after their demand for a debate on illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants in the national capital was turned down by Speaker Ram Niwas Goel.

They had also sought an exercise on the lines of Assam's NRC to identify and evict the illegal immigrants and demanded a Bill to facilitate the same.

The BJP legislators, wielding placards, staged a protest outside the chamber of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Vidhan Sabha.

The three including Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, Jagdish Pradhan and O P Sharma pressed for the debate but the Speaker rejected it saying he will not allow discussions on unlisted subjects.

Sharma alleged illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants were involved in criminal activities in the city.

"This is an issue related to national security but AAP government is shying away from a debate on it. An exercise like the National Register for Citizens (NRC) in Assam should also be conducted in Delhi," Gupta told reporters.

The leader of opposition had tried to raise the matter yesterday also through a calling attention motion.

The demand has been raised by other BJP leaders also, including the party's Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari.

Tiwari had recently written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh as well as Kejriwal seeking action against illegal immigrants in Delhi.
