The Arunachal Pradesh BJP today strongly objected to the recommendation of the state cabinet to dissolve the state assembly and subsequent endorsement by Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma, terming the move as 'unconstitutional and against democratic norms'.
In a memorandum to the Election Commission, the party said the term of the present Assembly would expire on November 4 next and election cannot be notified at any time earlier than six months before expiry of the present term.
The state cabinet last night recommended dissolution of the assembly on the ground of financial prudence and on the fact that holding two elections in the same year would involve huge financial burden on the state as well as halt development process for almost six months due to model code of conduct.
The governor, accepting the recommendation of the cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, dissolved the Assembly through a notification for overall interest of the people and the state and to ensure minimum disruption to the ongoing developmental activities.
A formal request was sent to the Election Commission today for holding simultaneous Assembly elections along with parliamentary polls, Chief Secretary Ramesh Negi said in a statement.
The BJP termed the move as 'unconstitutional and against democratic norms'.
The party in its memorandum said landlocked Arunachal has abject transportation and communication bottlenecks and the people and various political parties would be denied of minimum time of participation in the poll in a free and fair manner under such circumstances.
