The BJP Kishan Morcha today took out a rally from College Square to central Kolkata demanding better prices for the potato crop, which witnessed a bumper production this year.
"The potato farmers are forced to make distress sell at a much lower price than the production cost. The state government is sitting idle and doing nothing to save the potato farmers. We demand that the state set a minimum support price for Jyoti variety at Rs 7 per kg and Chandramukhi at Rs 9 per kg," Ramakrishna Pal, President of BJP Kissan Morcha, Bengal unit said.
The state government had announced that potatoes would be bought at a rate of Rs 4.60 (per kilogram).
