Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar today alleged that the BJP was trying to disturb social harmony and vitiate the atmosphere in the country.

Leading the state unit of the Congress on a fast here to protest against forces "attempting to disturb" harmony and create anarchy in the country, he said there was no political or electoral motive of the party behind today's programme.

The only aim was to ensure that the country's social fabric and harmony remained intact, Babbar said.

Led by its national president Rahul Gandhi, the Congress observed a nationwide day-long fast over several issues, including caste violence, communalism and non-functioning of the Parliament, for which it blames the ruling BJP.

Babbar said, "The anti-Dalit mentality of the BJP has been exposed by the manner in which police carried out lathicharge on protesters during the Bharat Bandh programme on April 2 the call for which was given by Dalit organisations."
