Duraisamy of Vijayamangalam in Tirupur district was arrested for allegedly trying to sexually assault a minor girl two months ago.
The inmates of the cell noticed Duraisamy hanging from the rod and informed jail officials.
Though he was rushed to the jail hospital, he was declared brought dead, police said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem.
