Two days after a nine-year old girl slipped and fell into an overflowing water drain, her body was found today in an open drain that leads to the Madiwala Lake here, a senior police official said.
The body of the girl from Tamil Nadu was recovered in a "bad state" from the drain this afternoon, DCP (South) B S Lokesh Kumar said, after the search operation involving men from civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike, police, the National Disaster Response Force and the Fire Force.
The search operation was stopped around 8 pm yesterday due to incessant rain and darkness and resumed this morning, he said.
On October 6, Geetha Lakshmi accidentally fell through a gap in a concrete slab covering a drain along Bannerghatta Road, while she was going along with her aunt to her house, he said.
"Heavy rains in the area had caused water logging and the child did not see the gaping hole," Kumar said.
Geetha, a resident of Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, was on a vacation here, he said.
Such incidents have been reported in the past as well, which have triggered public outcry against authorities concerned for failing to take remedial measures.
In May 2011, a 12-year-old boy fell into a storm water drain near Mysore Road.
Another incident took place in 2009 when a six-year-old boy fell into an uncovered drain flooded with rain water at Lingarajapuram. His body could not be located.
The same year in September, an 18-month-old boy fell into a drain near Madiwala.
