Bootlegger pleads guilty, made to stand in court for a day

Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Sandeep Garg let off convict Ranbir Singh with mild punishment of day-long detention till rising of the court (TRC), saying he has been facing the trial for last 14 years and has a family to be looked after. The convict was given the mild sentence after he pleaded guilty.

"Considering the socio-economic condition of the convict, the fact that he has family to look after and that he has already faced trial for about 14 years, convict Ranbir Singh is sentenced to TRC," MM Garg said.

According to the prosecution, on August 16, 1997 midnight, Ranbir Singh and co-accused Virender Singh, Suresh Kumar and Sukhdev Rathi were caught with 2,820 bottles of illicit liquor without any permit or license near Kishore Farm, DLF Chattarpur here.

The court also observed that chargesheet against all the four accused was filed in August 1998 and charges under the Excise Act was framed against them in 2001, to which they had pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.
