: Though still to be proved if IISER student Sagar Mondal committed suicide or was a victim of homicide, the police in nearby Haringhata is baffled by the alleged suicide of a 17-year-old boy, who in a suicide note stated that he was taking his own life unable to bear the pain caused by Mondal's death.
Soumitra Dhali, a class 12 Arts student of Fatepur High School, the school where the IISER student also studied in, allegedly took his own life by consuming poison, the police said.
The police quoted local people as saying that Dhali, who belonged to a poor family, went out of his home late last night and tried to hang himself with a rope, but he failed in his attempt. Then he came back home and consumed pesiticide.
Neighbours recovered a diary wherein he wrote in Bengali which, roughly translated in English, said, "Sagar da, you remind me of yourself too much. When you were alive, I never thought of you. But I don't know why I feel I am missing you too much! Where are you now? Mother cited you as an example to follow....I have decided to go to you."
Then in another entry in the diary, he significantly said, "Nobody becomes coward himself. The surrounding environment makes him coward. That is why persons commit suicide. Nobody will be able to stop suicides. It will happen by natural law. But it may be mitigated by councelling."
The Haringhata Rural Health Centre, where Dhali was taken at around 4.30 am on Monday, confirmed that he had consumed poison. However, he was referred to Kalyani JNM Hospital for further confirmation, the police has said.
