Prasad, a 1983 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, is serving in his state cadre, an official release issued today said.
The vacancy had been necessitated following transfer of Khurshid Ahmed Ganai to Jammu and Kashmir.
Ganai, a 1982 batch IAS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre, is likely to be made Home Secretary in the militancy- affected state.
Prasad's name was cleared by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
