Romanian media reported that the death was a suicide and the man was depressed.
A spokesman for Britain's Foreign Office, Simon Fraser, confirmed media reports that the man was a member of the diplomatic staff at the British embassy in Bucharest but did not name him or provide further details, citing privacy.
Police spokeswoman for the region Dumitrita Rus said the man died at about noon yesterday after falling from the top floor of the hotel in the city of Baia Mare.
Realitatea TV reported the man jumped from the seventh floor of the Mara Hotel in Baia Mare, some 450 kilometres northwest of Bucharest. It broadcast images of a body in a white sheet being put into a vehicle.
