Legendary musician Bruce Springsteen will receive a special award for his blockbuster solo show 'Springsteen on Broadway' at this year's Tony Awards.

The 68-year-old music icon will be honoured for his gig that went on to become the highest grossing new production of the 2017-18 season, the Tony Awards Administration Committee announced.

According to Variety, the show is an intimate, autobiographical narrative-driven concert built around excerpts from Springsteen's 2016 memoir, "Born to Run".

The production began previews from October 3 at the Walter Kerr Theatre and officially opened nine days later garnering rave reviews from both theatre fraternity and music press.

The limited engagement initially was scheduled to run through November 26, but overwhelming ticket demand along with Springsteen's engagement with the crowd - 939 people a night - have prompted him to extend the concert multiple times.

Following a brief hiatus, the show is now back on the boards and selling through December 15.

A total sellout, with barely four shows for weeks, the production has been pulling in close to USD 2 million - the figure climbing to USD 2.4 million on five-performance weeks.

The average ticket price has remained around USD 500 throughout the run, with cumulative box office currently at USD 55 million.

It will be Springsteen's first Tony, among 20 Grammys, one Academy Award and four AMAs and more.

It is currently unknown if the "Born In The USA" hitmaker would perform at the award ceremony to be telecast on June 10.
