Hundreds of Buddhist monks from across South and Southeast Asia today gathered outside the UN headquarters and Indian embassy here to demand increased security at the Mahabodi shrine in India.
More than 400 Buddhist monks from across South and Southeast Asia marched to the UN here and then the Indian embassy to protest the Sunday's terror attack at one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Bihar.
Two monks were injured when 10 serial blasts struck the Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya.
Hundreds of Thais visit Bodh Gaya every year for Pilgrimage. Thailand is a Buddhist majority country.
"The Mahabodi is like the heart of Buddhists all over the world, so the bombing was a shock," said Pornchai Pinyapong, head of the World Youth Buddhist Association that organised the protest march.
"We want the Indian government to protect the Mahabodi shrine more seriously and restore the damaged sections," he said.
Pornchai said security measures were not adequate for Buddhism's sacred seat.
