Bypoll to Kanubari Assembly seat deferred

The by-election to Kanubari (ST) Assembly Constituency in Arunachal Pradesh, slated for tomorrow, has been deferred by the Election Commission in view of pendency of a review petition listed for hearing in the Supreme Court on July 11.
The EC in its order stated that enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct would remain in abeyance until further direction, state Chief Electoral Officer said in a press release.
Tony Pertin, the advocate for the petitioners, D Wangsu and Wanglam Sawin, had written to Chief Election Commissioner to withdraw the Kanubari by-election notification in view of pendency of the review petition in the apex court.

Kanubari and Khonsa East Assembly Constituencies fell vacant after MLAs Gabriel Wangsu and Wanglam Sawin had resigned. Their resignation was accepted by previous Speaker Nabam Rebia in a controversial circumstance.
Both Gabriel and Sawin alleged that they were made to resign under duress and had written to the Governor seeking his intervention. They had taken the matter to court.
