The Centre has sanctioned its first project under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for Chhattisgarh, under which 26,908 houses would be constructed in the state, a senior official said today.

"During a meeting of the Central Approval and Monitoring Committee headed by Secretary, Housing and Urban Development, Government of India, Nandita Chatterjee yesterday, the Centre approved the proposal of Chhattisgarh under the scheme," state Housing and Environment Secretary Sanjay Shukla said.

Under the scheme, the Chhattisgarh government would develop 26,908 houses with an expenditure of about Rs 1,900 crore while the Centre would allocate an aid of Rs 190 crore for the purpose, he said.

Of the total target, 12,670 houses would be of Economic Weaker Sections (EWS) category, 13,364 houses for the Low Income Groups (LIG), whereas 874 houses would be constructed for the High Income Groups (HIG) and Medium Income Groups (MIG), he said.

These houses would be developed in Raipur's Kamal Vihar, Naya Raipur and Nardaha (on the outskirts of the state capital) besides Mahasamund, Rajnandgaon, Kanker, Sukma, Raigarh, Balod, Bilaspur and Durg districts.

The price of the houses constructed for the EWS and LIG would cost about Rs 3-4.5 lakh after subsidy.
