Thousands of people in cities and towns across Canada paid emotional tribute to the dead in the Paris terror attacks and vowed to support France in its darkest hour.
Islamic State jihadists carried out the first-ever suicide attacks on French soil, sowing terror at six locations in Paris in a rampage on late Friday that left at least 129 people dead.
More than 1,000 people turned out in mostly French-speaking Montreal, in front of the French consulate.
"France is in mourning. The fact that many politicians are here with us is a sign that we are still standing. We are not going to let ourselves be swept away by hatred," said Catherine Feuillet, France's general consul in the city.
"Montrealers, we are all Parisians," said Anie Samson, a city councillor who rallied Montreal residents to turn out for a silent march yesterday.
Some in the crowd waved French flags and paid their respects at a makeshift memorial with a huge heart made out of candles.
"France is still standing, Quebec is with you and will be fighting alongside you," said Bernard Drainville, a Parti Quebecois lawmaker.
Similar shows of strong public support took place in Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec City.
