Cancer awareness run held

As part of its Diamond jubilee
celebrations, the Cancer Institute (WIA) held a run here today to create awareness about cancer and need for early diagnosis.
Dr V Shanta, chairperson of the Cancer Institute underscored the need for early diagnosis while participating in the inaugural.
She stressed that it was not cancer that should be feared but only not diagnosing it at an early stage. "Fear not cancer, fear only not diagnosing it early. It is curable."
Tamil film actor Surya inaugurated the run in which a large number of young men and women participated wearing T-shirts with "Who said cancer is not curable?" slogan.
The Cancer Institute is renowned for its pioneering work in providing treatment for cancer, especially for the indigent. Out of 423 beds, it has 297 are free.
It was founded in 1954 with the support of Women's India Association by Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy the first Indian woman to graduate in medicine in 1912.
The Tamil Nadu government provides an annual grant for the institute. Last year, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had announced a grant of Rs five crore for the diamond jubilee building of the institute.
