Cancers of liver, pancreas, gall bladder rose in Mumbai in

There was a rise in the cases of cancers of liver, gall bladder and pancreas in Mumbai during 2014, according to a report by Mumbai Cancer Registry.
The report was released by the Indian Cancer Society yesterday.
Incidence of lung cancer in females increased during the year, though maximum cases among them were still of breast cancer, said the report, based on data collected from 137 centres.
Over the previous ten years, cases of cancers of mouth, lungs, colon, kidney, urinary bladder, liver and the central nervous system tumours were increasing among the male population, the report said.
Among the women, breast and ovarian cancer cases continued to register an increase in 2014, while the cases of cervical cancer decreased. Lung cancer trends among women showed a sharp increase, the report stated.

While esophageal and stomach cancer cases showed decrease, there was increase in cases of liver, gall bladder and pancreatic cancers in both men and women.

In 2014, 6,643 (49 pc) male and 6,921 (51 pc) women were diagnosed with cancer for the first time. There was not much difference in the proportion of incidence gender-wise, the report said.
Among males, cancers of digestive organs contributed 26.3 pc cases, followed by that of respiratory organs at 14.5 pc. Leading cancers were of lungs, mouth, prostate, liver and lymphomas. In females, leading cancers were of breast, cervix, ovary, lungs and corpus uteri, the report stated.

Indian Cancer Society was established in 1951 by Dr D Jussawala and Naval Tata as the first NGO in the country dedicated to spreading awarenes about cancer. It also conducts screening for early detection, especially for the underprivileged sections.
