The CBI has booked former Additional Income Tax Commissioner R Manjunathaswamy for allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs four lakh from a private company for helping it in tax assessments.
The official has been named in the FIR alongwith RNS Infrastructure Ltd, Bangalore, and vice president of the company Sunil D Sahasrabuddhe for alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption.
The case was registered on a written complaint from Joint Director of Income Tax Vigilance Unit Sheila Parthasarathy alleging irregularities by Manjunathaswamy during his tenure at Range 3, Hubli in the scrutiny of tax assessment of the company for assessment years 2006-07 and 2007-08.
She had alleged that RNS had declared the income of Rs 14 crore, which was processed in few days. The case was selected for scrutiny under computer aided scrutiny selection system and the officer issued notice to it.
Similarly, the company filed its return for the year 2007-08 showing income of Rs 24 crore which also came under scrutiny. Both the scrutiny assessments were conducted by Manjunathaswamy, it said.
Additional DG of Income Tax (Vigilance) conducted inspection of the assessment records of the company which showed that Manjunathaswamy had committed serious lapses in the process.
Manjunathaswamy ignored glaring discrepancies and intentionally omitted to obtain the basic details.
The Income Tax department, during its searches in 2012, found an "exclusive dairy" maintained by Sahasrabudhe, showing payments to several persons, it alleged.
During questioning, he admitted one of the payments of Rs 4 lakh to Manjunathaswamy on January 24, 2009, it said.
