The CBI today detected large number of alleged irregularities in issuance of birth certificates by North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) during a surprise check, and it will soon begin an inquiry into the matter.
The agency had received information that officers of NDMC were allegedly working in connivance of touts for issuing birth certificates and minting money in the process, sources said.
It was alleged that several birth certificates were being issued by using unique SDM order number of any genuine applicant.
It was also alleged that multiple birth certificates were being issued on basis of the hospital records of any genuine applicant, they said.
After getting the information, a team of CBI officers carried out surprise checks at the office of Registrar Births and Deaths of NDMC at Rajpur Road, Office of SDM Model town, and Headquarters of NDMC at the Civic Centre here.
The sources said, during surprise check, several instances were found that substantiated the allegations.
"The CBI, Delhi have accordingly collected several incriminating documents and was further examining the matter," a CBI official said, adding that agency will soon start an inquiry into it.
North Delhi Mayor Ravinder Gupta, when contacted, said the Corporation was against corruption and will "not protect" anyone found guilty.
"If CBI, during the course of its inquiry, finds any NDMC employee guilty then we are with the probing agency as we have a zero-tolerance towards corruption," he said.
