CBI has shared with Serious Fraud Office of the UK details of the antecedents of a Mumbai-based businessman with regard to a probe by the British office into the alleged bribery scandal involving French company Alstom.
CBI sources said today that the SFO sought the background details of the businessman in connection with his alleged role in the bribery scandal involving the French engineering group.
The sources said the request was routed to it by the Central Vigilance Commission seeking details of the person whose role was suspected in helping the company to clinch some major contracts.
They said a detailed background check was done including the details of the person's business, financial transaction etc and whatever information was permitted under law has been shared with the British anti-corruption office.
The sources clarified that the request was limited to background check in the SFO's ongoing probe against Alstom in the United Kingdom.
When asked to comment on the development, Alstom said in a statement, "we do not comment on ongoing investigations. We confirm that Alstom continues to work constructively with the authorities to address any allegations of past misconduct.
"In the meantime, the company is committed to assuring that it conducts its worldwide business fully in compliance with all laws and regulations."
Meanwhile, Senior Press and Communication Officer, SFO, UK, responding to an email, said, "we decline to comment as our investigation is ongoing".
Asked to comment on the development, CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad has said a letter from SFO UK has been received in which it has only asked for details of antecedents of a private individual from CBI.
