The girl, aged 3 to 4 years, was found murdered in Pune recently, but there was no evidence of assault, said Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K P Bakshi today.
While looking out for clues, police took the help of CCTV cameras installed near the crime scene as part of the security set up.
"The CCTV memory was retrieved and the footage was studied. Police got visuals of an elderly man carrying a child and walking suspiciously at around 3 am. When the image was enlarged it was found that the child carried by the old man and the dead girl were the same," he said.
The senior bureaucrat narrated this incident while giving details about a proposed plan to install CCTV cameras in Mumbai's police stations.
A CCTV network in Pune was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on August 8 as part of the government's plan to beef up security in Maharashtra's cultural capital.
