Congress leaders and members of the party's youth wing today joined a section of DU teachers, who are protesting the varsity's move to implement the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), and accused the Central government of systematically attacking institutions of higher education.
In a panel discussion with the teachers from Academics of Action and Development (AAD), Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Maken expressed concern over the CBCS and termed the Central government's policies as "anti-students and anti-teachers".
"The government of the day is not only attacking the institutions of Higher Education systematically, but also taking away the right to ask questions and the right to get answers," party leader Randeep Surjewala was quoted as saying in a statement.
"This move will convert teachers into clerks controlled by the Central government. The statutory bodies will be deprived of the contributions of elected representatives therein," he added.
Aditya Narain Mishra, a DU professor said, "CBCS is a blatant attack on the autonomous university system with out any academic vision. Common syllabus has been imposed by the UGC depriving the teachers from their basic rights to frame the syllabus."
The credit based semester system provides flexibility in assigning credits based on the course content and hours of teaching.
The performance of students under the system will be adjudged in terms of grades rather than numerical marks.
