Centre should stop Punjab from passing bill on SYL canal: Vij

Amid row over water-sharing, Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij today said the Centre should "intervene" and "stop" Punjab from passing a Bill which envisages returning the land acquired for the contentious Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) project.
"Center Govt should intervene stop Punjab Govt from passing a bill de-notifying land acquired for #SYL to avoid further complicating issue," (sic) he tweeted.
Vij asked the Parkash Singh Badal-led Punjab government not to "spoil atmosphere", saying the SAD-BJP government should wait for the Supreme Court verdict on Presidential reference on the Punjab Termination of Agreements Act, 2004.
"Satluj-Yamuna Link Canal row- SC verdict awaited, Punjab govt should not spoil atmosphere," (sic) he tweeted.

Any announcement on SYL Canal issue made by the Punjab Government before the Supreme Court's decision amounts to challenging the authority of the apex court, Vij had said yesterday.
Punjab Cabinet yesterday gave nod to introduce 'The Punjab Satluj Yamuna Link Canal (Rehabilitation and Re-vesting of Proprietary Rights) Bill, 2016' in the ongoing session of state assembly to de-notify and return 5,376 acres of land acquired for the construction of the canal to the owners.
The draft of the Bill stipulated that such land owners or their successors-in-interest, would repay the total amount of compensation along with all statuary benefits accrued to them along with the rate of interest to be notified by the government, in 60 equal instalments starting from the expiry of sixth month from the date of notification.
