The rising mercury in the city has given rise to soaring demand for power, with the power utiliy CESC today recording the highest-ever peak demand.
The CESC said that at 3.30 pm the power demand was 1957 MW, the highest in its history.
In a statement, the company said that the figure was five per cent more than the previous year's peak demand of 1865 MW, recorded on May 10.
Today the peak temperature was 38.4 degrees Celsius against 41.4 degrees yesterday.
CESC officials said that the demand was met by the utility's own capacity of 1134 MW while the rest was supplied by WBSEDCL and other sources.
