Dhanwant Singh Matharoo is the chancellor of one of the self-financed private universities in Arunachal Pradesh and is also the founder of Amritsar-based Apex Education Group.
He was summoned by the state's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Sunday last for his alleged role in facilitating sale of fake PhD degrees to students outside Meghalaya and arrested later but he complained of ill health and was admitted to the hospital.
Police believed he was one of the close aides of Chandra Mohan Jha, the self-styled chancellor of CMJ University, and was actively involved in the internal affairs of the university.
Matharoo, who founded the Apex Education Group in Amritsar, was alleged to have been running over 500 centres across the country which facilitated the admission of over 10,000 students to CMJ University here.
