A day after the Centre extended the deadline for filing annual GST returns by three months, Congress leader Ashok Chavan claimed that the decision came after he wrote to the Union Finance Minister on the issue.

He had asked finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the date in view of the widespread damage caused by floods in parts of Maharashtra, the former chief minister said.

The government on Monday extended the last date for filing Goods and Services Tax returns to November 30 from August 31 as tax payers were facing technical issues in filing returns.

"I had demanded the Union Finance Minister @nsitharaman to extend the deadline to file #GST returns in the backdrop of the great floods. The efforts have been successful and the deadline to file #GST_Return and #Audit_Report has been extended. I am happy that the traders have got relief in the crisis time," Chavan tweeted.

He had written to Sitharaman on August 19, he said.
