The Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Manjula Chellur today intervened to resolve the 11-day deadlock over boycott of Justice Girish Gupta's court by the Bar Association demanding his apology for alleged misbehaviour towards them.
The Calcutta High Court Bar Association leadership said it was hopeful of an amicable settlement to the imbroglio and that it would hold a general body meeting soon.
In a rare instance, the Chief Justice walked through the first floor corridor from her court room to Justice Gupta's court room and entered the room through the door, used by litigants and lawyers, at around 12.40 pm.
Justice Chellur was accompanied by West Bengal Advocate General Jayanta Mitra.
Mitra then told Justice Gupta that as the Chief Justice has intervened, the matter was deemed to be resolved.
However, a section of lawyers want that whatever decision is taken by the Calcutta High Court Bar Association, it should be through a resolution as the decision to boycott Justice Gupta's court was taken through a resolution at its general body meeting.
Asked about the different views of the Advocate General and a section of lawyers, Bar Association general secretary Suranjan Dasgupta said efforts were on by all sections to reach an amicable settlement and that he was hopeful that the matter would be resolved in a couple of days.
"The Chief Justice, the Advocate General and we from Bar Association are all trying to reach an amicable settlement. I am hopeful that the matter will be resolved within another two days," Dasgupta told PTI.
"We will call a general body meeting and with the consent of all members will hopefully take a resolution resolving the deadlock," he said.
Earlier in the day, Bar Association president R N Das represented the body before Justice Gupta's court for hearing on a judicial notice that the judge had given to the Association.
He prayed for time to reply to the notice till Monday, which was granted by Justice Gupta.
