The status of national sports of India was not confirmed, the Sports Authority of India told the Central Information Commission.
Information Commissioner Sridhar Acharyulu today directed the SAI to collect information from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on the national sports and provide to an RTI applicant.
One Keshav Khandelwal had filed an RTI application with the SAI seeking to know the national game of India and whether hockey was the national game of India or not.
When he did not get a response, he filed a complaint against the SAI before the Central Information Commission, highest appellate authority in the matters pertaining to the RTI Act which heard the matter last week.
During the hearing, the SAI official said the application was transferred to the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs but there was no further correspondence from it.
"He stated that the status of national sports of India is not confirmed and the response to the RTI application could not be provided in the form of 'Yes' or 'No', Acharyulu noted in the order.
In the order issued today, the commissioner directed the SAI official to collect the information from the MOYAS regarding declaration of the national sports of India and provide it to Khandelwal.
