Lack of proper recycling and reuse of waste is further aggravating the problems of landfills, Minister of State for Urban Development Deepa Dasmunshi said in a written reply.
"Problem of landfills for dumping garbage in urban areas has increased manifold in the recent past. The main factors responsible for it are lack of dumping space, financial constraints and inadequate capacity of the Urban Local Bodies," she said.
In view of the land and financial constraints faced by most of the small and large cities for creating sanitary landfill for disposing of municipal solid waste, the Ministry formulated a guidance note for Municipal Solid Waste Management in 2011, Dasmunshi said.
