As part of the probe into the clash in the central prison here leading to the death of two convicts, ADGP (Prisons) Kamal Pant today visited the jail and held talks with jail staff, inmates and the police.
Pant said the issue was being taken very seriously as two murders had taken place inside the jail. A detailed inquiry would be held to find out how weapons were brought inside the prison.
The motive behind the murders would come to light only after a detailed investigation. An internal inquiry was also being held by the Prisons department, he said.
Pant said Mysuru jail superintendent Anand Reddy had also been directed to probe the incident. Discussions would be held with the City police commissioner S Murugan and a prompt and speedy action would be taken in the case.
Answering a question, he said the new building of the prison could only accommodate 200 convicts, but now there were 400 of them including undertrials, forcing the authorities to use the old building also.
Different groups of criminals were being kept in separate buildings after studying their behaviour to avoid clashes. There had been no group clashes in the Mangaluru prison for last several months, Pant said.
On the charge from some inmates that jail staff was involved in the clash, Pant said strict action would be taken if any official or staff was found to be involved in the incident.
To a query if any communal factor was behind the murders, he said it was too premature to comment on it as the investigations were still on.
Two convicts, Madoor Isubu and his associate Ganesh Shetty, both serving jail term in murder cases, were killed in clashes that erupted between two groups inside the district prison during breakfast time yesterday.
One of them is suspected to be an aide of gangster Chota Shakeel.
