Pledging his government's support to sugarcane farmers, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today flayed Opposition parties for creating an uproar in the Assembly over cane price issue.
"The Opposition parties do not have issues to fight for, so they are stalling the House proceedings," Yadav told the Assembly when it re-assembled after the question hour which was adjourned with Opposition demanding increase in cane prices and payment of dues to farmers.
"The government has fixed the price at Rs 280 and would ensure that farmers get their payments," Yadav said, adding that "everyone is aware of the situation of the market."
Attacking BSP and BJP whose leaders Swami Prasad Maurya and Hukum Singh were on their feet to raise the issue of cane growers, Yadav said, "BSP sold away 21 sugar mills...The Mohiuddinpur sugar mill whose price was assessed by previous BSP government at Rs 25 crores (for selling) has been restarted at the investment of Rs 10 crores."
"During the BJP government, farmers were killed. SP government on the other hand has benefitted farmers. Farmers are getting free water from canals, tubewells, they have Rs five lakhs kisan accident insurance scheme," he said.
Yadav said that had the previous government made efforts in the power sector the scene would have been different.
Earlier this morning, as soon as the House met at 11 am, BJP members jumped into the Well of the House with placards demanding cane price at Rs 350 per quintal and payment of Rs 2,400 crore cane dues to farmers.
They raised slogans against the state government alleging apathetic attitude towards the cane growers.
BJP members also demanded immediate check on harassment of paddy growers of eastern UP.
RLD members also jumped in the Well on the sugarcane issue while BSP members stood on their place wearing caps with slogan "Chini mil maliko ki dalal sarkar, Akhilesh Yadav ki SaPa sarkar" (Akhilesh Yadav government is agent of sugar mill owners).
Amidst din, Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey adjourned the House for 30 minutes initially and later, when it met again and the Opposition stick to its stand, entire question hour was adjourned.
