In a letter to the chief minister, TEA said Tirupur city, knitwear export hub of India, contributed about 10 per cent of total exports from Tamil Nadu and the city needed infrastructure development and IT facilities for the growth of export under Smart City Program.
"We wish to note that the knitwear exports from Tirupur has recorded Rs.20,730 crore in 2014-15 and is poised to reach Rs.36,000 crore in next two years," TEA president, A Shaktivel said in the letter.
Moreover, better infrastructure facility in Tirupur will not only enhance the exports but also provide additional employment to workers, mainly women workers from rural areas.
The implementation of information technology, at this juncture, was increasingly becoming essential for faster business decision making and efficient communication apart from leading a quality life and a smart city was the only solution for it, he added.
