To assess present status of Sanskrit education and integrate the language into modern education system, government has set up a commission to suggest among others a road map for upgrading Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan into an institution of national importance.
It would undertake a survey of existing facilities for Sanskrit education in schools, colleges, universities and other institutions and to suggest measures for promoting the study of Sanskrit at all levels, including research.
The 13-member commission, headed by eminent scholar Prof. Satyavrat Shastri, will examine the traditional system of sanskrit education in order to find out what features from it could be usefully incorporated into the modern system, said officials in the HRD Ministry.
It would also suggest measures to integrate Sanskrit studies with other disciplines like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Medical Science, Law, Architecture, Languages etc. And make them more relevant to modern times.
Besides, it would suggest measures for non-formal or distance education system for Sanskrit, they said.
"Over and above all, it would suggest a road map for upgrading the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan into an institution of national importance," the officials said.
The commission would also devise means for setting up a translation bureau in universities and institutions of higher learning for translating standard Sanskrit works in regional languages and vice versa.
It is expected to submit its report within a year.
