Congress Rajya Sabha MP Naran Rathwa today wrote a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani asking him to declare a state holiday for the "International Day of the World's Indigenous People" which is observed on August 9.
The Congress MP from Gujarat said that the state had a large tribal population of around one crore of which several were government employees.
He said that a state government holiday on August 9 would allow people from tribal communities to participate in programmes organised in connection with the International Day of the World's Indigenous People.
The United Nations had, in 1994, declared this day to promote and protect the rights of indigenous people across the world.
