Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) has organised a protest march on January 20 against "corruption" in the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which has been run by the saffron combine of Shiv Sena and BJP for long.
Addressing a press conference today, MRCC President Janardhan Chandurkar said the agitation will be held at Azad Maidan, opposite the BMC headquarters in South Mumbai, and around 10,000 party workers from across the city and suburbs will join the protest.
"We will raise issues like corruption in the civic body, recent hike in fare of BEST buses, rise in levy of parking charges and property tax," Chandurkar said.
Taking a dig at BJP, he said though international oil prices have come down drastically and oil companies have recorded profit but the benefit has not been passed on to the common man. "Achhe din have not arrived so far for Mumbaikars," he said.
Chandurkar said all the 51 corporators of Congress, besides 85 block presidents, party legislators and those candidates who had unsuccessfully contested the state Assembly elections last year, along with the state and city unit leaders, will participate in the morcha.
He referred to the reported statement of state ACB DG Pravin Dixit in which the latter had said that prices of flats in Mumbai would fall by at least Rs 500 per sq ft if corruption in BMC is rooted out.
Dixit had last month said that construction to the tune of 1 crore sq ft takes place annually in Mumbai and civic authorities seek bribe at the rate of Rs 500 per sq ft.
Latching on to Dixit's remarks, Congress and NCP leaders had met Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and urged the latter to initiate an inquiry.
