Opposition Congress members today staged a walkout from the Rajasthan Assembly for not allowing them to speak during the discussion on rising price of sand.
NPP MLA Kirori Meena raised the issue in the Assembly, saying some influential people in ruling BJP, in connivance with officers, have controlled the sale of sand and inflated its prices.
He demanded the appointment of a high-level committee having MLAs as its members to take the sand trade out of the hands of mafia and control its price.
As other MLAs, including that of Congress, tried to speak on the issue, House chairperson Rao Rajendra Singh denied them permission and asked the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Rathore to reply.
Amid the din, the minister said the government was serious on the issue and would take all possible steps for controlling sand prices.
He said the sand mafia grew due to the policies of the previous Congress government and the BJP government has taken efforts for controlling the rates.
Unhappy with the reply, Congress walked out of the House.
After the reply, the chairman adjourned the house.
Earlier, the House passed IIHMR University bill 2014, Rajasthan Right to Hearing (Amendment) bill 2014, Agriculture University, Jobner (Change of Name) Bill 2014 by voice vote.
