The poster with the words "Resign Rahul, and give somebody else a chance", had the picture of former Kanpur MP and ex-minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.
News about the poster led to sharp reactions among local Congress members and leaders who met at the party office here at Tilak Hall.
Responding to the queries on the poster, Jaiswal told reporters that it is a "well-planned plot to tarnish our reputation".
"Rahul Gandhi will remain Congress's vice president and we all will work under his leadership to strengthen the party. Rahul is our undisputed leader and nowadays, he is on leave for introspection," he said.
"Anti-party acitivities will not be tolerated, however big the person is," he said, adding that opposing factions of the party involved in the plotting will soon be revealed.
