Congress workers today burnt copies of the Land Acquisition Ordinance at all block and district headquarters in the state demanding adequate relief for the farmers hit by untimely rains and hailstorm.
On a call given by AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry and UPCC president Nirmal Khatri, the party workers burnt copies of the ordinance and effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging that the legislation was anti-farmer.
The protesters demanded adequate compensation for the crop growers hit by untimely rains and to the families of the farmers who have died of shock apparently due to damage to their crops.
Khatri took part at protest events in Kannauj and Farrukhabad where a two minute silence was observed over farmers suicides. He also announced monetary help of Rs 25,000 for a Kannauj farmer who allegedly committed suicide over damage to his crops.
Similar programmes were held in different parts of the state, a party statement said.
