According to police, the incident took place during the checking when three persons in an SUV opened fire on the police team when they tried to stop the vehicle, following which police retaliated.
Two policemen and one of the miscreants, Ravindra, were injured in the firing while remaining two managed to escape, they said.
All the three injured were admitted to PGI Khanpur where Head constable Pradeep succumbed to his injuries later.
The matter is being investigated, Sonipat Superintendent of Police Abhishek Garg, said.
