Technology firm Continental on Thursday said it is adding new production lines at its Manesar-based manufacturing plant to significantly ramp up production of speed sensors.

Demand for speed sensors has gone up in India due to passing of various safety and emission legislations, the Germany-based firm said in a statement.

Already, with the vehicle safety legislation coming to effect in April 2019, there is a rapid increase in demand for ABS units.

The signals from the wheel speed sensors are required to control systems like anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). The sensors help to prevent the wheels from locking or spinning, thus, taking an appropriate control action to maintain the vehicle's stability and steering responses.

Continental's Manesar-based plant, which produces speed sensors for both passenger vehicles and two-wheelers, has already crossed production milestone of one million speed sensors in a month.

"In the last few years, we have been steadily increasing our capacity to meet the growing demand for integrated safety technologies in India. Safety legislation and increased awareness among the consumers have been the key drivers for the uptake of the safety technologies in India," Continental Automotive India MD Prashanth Doreswamy said.

Continental has been an ardent advocate and promoter of integrated road safety technologies across different markets, he added.

"On-road fatalities in India are significantly higher, as compared to other markets. For this reason, it becomes critical for us to have a strong focus on road safety technologies for the region. With our wide portfolio of safety technologies, we are supporting OEMs in India and in global market to achieve optimal level of vehicle safety," Doreswamy said.
