Council of churches celebrates centennial year

Centennial celebrations of National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) began at the Synod Conference Hall here today.
Addressing the congregation, state governor Vakkom Purushothaman said India being a secular country, every citizen has the freedom to choose his or her religion.
Purushothaman congratulated the NCCI which attained 100 years and now has 14 million members comprising of a conglomerate of 30 church denominations, 17 Christian regional councils, 17 national level Church organisations, seven agencies and three autonomous bodies.
He lauded the role of the church in the upliftment of Mizo society, saying maximum contribution to the development of the society came from the church.
The valedictory service of the celebrations would be held on Sunday night at the Presbyterian Church of Mission Veng, one of the first churches in Mizoram.
